After finishing high school in Year 11 and a few years of bouncing around looking for work here and there, Sophie began working in hospitality catering for large events. Being autistic, this wasn’t the ideal environment in which to work with high pressure deadlines and constant ‘noise’.
Sophie switched careers and became a personal care assistant, organising school pick up/drop-offs, cleaning and meal preparation. Whilst she enjoyed this work, she was capable of a whole lot more even if she didn’t realise it at the time.
Fast forward to 2019 and Sophie’s application to join a supported work program for autistic individuals. Sophie is now a very successful IT analyst working in Financial Services. With no prior experience, Sophie gained a place on a autism@work program which provided training in technical skills and support to help her adjust to a corporate working environment.
Sophie is now a very well respected member of the wider team, living independently, providing for others in her family and has a very fulfilling career ahead of her.
Sophie is an autistic woman, aged 35-40
